Shenzhen is one of the world’s great urban experiments. A fishing and manufacturing region transformed into a megacity within a few decades, it has none of the ancient monuments associated with Beijing or Shanghai—and that is precisely what makes it interesting. Architecture here is about what comes next. Food reflects a city built by people arriving from across China. Cantonese cooking provides the regional foundation, with dim sum, roast meats and exceptional seafood, but almost every major Chinese cuisine can be found somewhere in Shenzhen. Its young, international population has also created an increasingly sophisticated landscape of contemporary restaurants, coffee shops, cocktail bars and craft breweries. Hong Kong sits immediately across the border, while the wider Pearl River Delta provides one of Asia’s richest culinary regions. Shenzhen may lack centuries of its own culinary tradition, but it compensates with appetite and extraordinary variety.
