Hotel Brummell sits quietly on the edge of Montjuïc, far removed from Barcelona’s busiest tourist streets. Opened in 2015 by Christian Schallert, the hotel transformed an 1870 townhouse into an intimate urban retreat that immediately felt rooted in its surroundings. Rather than competing with Barcelona’s grand hotels, Brummell embraces a smaller, more personal scale, inviting guests to experience the city much like a local resident. The atmosphere is relaxed. Never performative.

Tropical Modernism Meets Catalonia

Designed by Australian studio Blankslate together with architect Inma Rábano, the interiors draw inspiration from the tropical modernism of Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Concrete surfaces, natural timber, handcrafted furniture, lush planting, and carefully collected Sri Lankan antiques are balanced with European craftsmanship and bespoke pieces by local artisans. The result is warm, light-filled, and wonderfully tactile, creating interiors that feel simultaneously Mediterranean and international. Nothing feels overstyled. Everything feels naturally composed.

Small Hotel, Big Character

With only 20 guestrooms and two apartments, every space feels carefully considered. Rooms combine rain showers, heated bathroom floors, natural materials, custom furniture, and understated detailing with balconies or terraces in many categories. The penthouses add private outdoor bathtubs overlooking the rooftops of Barcelona, while even the smallest rooms maintain the calm residential atmosphere that defines the hotel. Luxury here feels personal. Never excessive.

Wellness as a Way of Life

Brummell has always been about more than simply providing a place to sleep. Guests are encouraged to join complimentary yoga sessions, running clubs, boxing classes, and cycling routes that connect directly with Montjuïc and the surrounding neighbourhood. A compact rooftop terrace with its Palm Springs-inspired plunge pool and sauna offers a peaceful escape after exploring the city, while Café Schallert welcomes both locals and visitors throughout the day with thoughtful breakfasts, fresh pastries, and relaxed all-day dining. The boundaries between hotel and neighbourhood quietly disappear. Exactly as intended.
