Cap Karoso was conceived as more than a luxury resort. Created by French owners Fabrice and Evguenia Ivara, the project began not with construction but with listening. Before the first foundations were laid, local Marapu elders and shamans blessed the land, establishing a relationship with Sumba’s spiritual traditions that continues to shape the property today. The landscape comes first. Everything else follows.

Architecture in Conversation with Nature

The design speaks a contemporary language without losing its connection to place. Clean modernist volumes are softened by sweeping roofs inspired by traditional Sumbanese architecture, while locally sourced stone, timber, bamboo, terrazzo, and polished concrete create a restrained material palette. Throughout the interiors, carved wall panels inspired by ikat weaving, handcrafted furniture, Gaya ceramics, and Pierre Frey textiles bring together international design and local artistry. Modernism meets tradition. Both feel perfectly balanced.

Rooms Shaped by the Island

Studios, suites, and private villas embrace the surrounding landscape. Large openings frame uninterrupted views of the ocean, tropical gardens, and farmland, while private terraces, plunge pools, and open-air bathtubs encourage guests to experience life outdoors. Natural materials, handcrafted details, and carefully curated furnishings create interiors that feel luxurious without ever becoming excessive. Comfort feels effortless. A Resort Fed by Its Own Land

Food lies at the heart of Cap Karoso’s philosophy. A three-hectare organic farm supplies much of the produce served across the resort’s restaurants, celebrating ingredients grown only moments from the kitchen. At Julang, visiting international chefs reinterpret Sumbanese flavours through ever-changing tasting menus, while relaxed beachfront dining and poolside restaurants showcase the same commitment to seasonality and provenance. The cuisine belongs here. So does every ingredient.

Cape Karoso encourages guests to experience the island beyond its beaches.
