A House Rewritten

Casa do Conto means “House of Tales,” and few hotels embody their name so completely. Originally a nineteenth-century bourgeois residence, the building was almost ready to open as a hotel when a fire destroyed much of the interior in 2009. Rather than reconstruct what had been lost, architect Luís Sobral and the Pedra Líquida team chose a more courageous path: preserving the memory of the house while creating something entirely contemporary. The result is neither restoration nor replacement. It is reinvention.

Concrete as Storytelling

The architecture is defined by extraordinary restraint. Raw concrete walls and ceilings, polished floors, crisp white surfaces, and carefully preserved stone create a calm, almost monastic atmosphere. Yet the most remarkable design gesture appears overhead, where the ceilings of each suite are engraved with original texts by six Portuguese writers and architectural thinkers, transforming the structure itself into a literary canvas. Architecture becomes narrative. Literally.

Six Rooms, Six Voices

Each of the hotel’s six suites follows the same architectural language while expressing a different personality. The engraved ceiling text changes from room to room, influencing how each space is experienced. Vintage furnishings, local photography, antique mirrors, sculptural lighting, and carefully chosen artworks soften the bold geometry without distracting from it. Several suites include balconies overlooking Porto’s rooftops, while others feature compact kitchenettes for longer stays. Minimalism here never feels empty. It feels intentional.

A Cultural House

Casa do Conto has always been conceived as more than accommodation. Its living room, library, garden, and dining spaces encourage conversation, while exhibitions, concerts, talks, and collaborations with local artists continue the building’s role as a cultural meeting place. Breakfast is served in the light-filled dining room overlooking the quiet courtyard garden, reinforcing the relaxed residential atmosphere. Hospitality here feels thoughtful. Almost intellectual.

Porto Beyond the Pages

Located between Boavista and Cedofeita, Casa do Conto offers a quieter perspective on Porto while remaining within walking distance of the historic centre, Casa da Música, galleries, independent cafés, and many of the city’s most interesting creative spaces. It is a neighbourhood that rewards curiosity. Much like the hotel itself.

Why It Works

Casa do Conto succeeds because it refuses nostalgia. Instead of recreating the past, Pedra Líquida transformed loss into architectural expression, allowing literature, concrete, and memory to become inseparable. The result is one of Porto’s most intellectually engaging boutique hotels—a place where architecture doesn’t simply frame the experience, but tells the story itself.
