Hôtel de Silhouette

Hôtel de Silhouette sits in the centre of Biarritz, directly in the lively Halles district and within walking distance of Grande Plage, Côte des Basques and the city’s restaurants, shops and markets. The building dates to the 17th century and is associated with Étienne de Silhouette, finance minister under Louis XV. Its age is still legible in the proportions and historic details, even if the interiors now belong to a much more colourful era. That contrast is central to the hotel’s character: old Biarritz outside, layered contemporary escapism within.

Maximalism, but With Warmth

The 2021 renovation introduced a far richer visual identity. Rather than relying on neutral luxury, the interiors mix tobacco brown, terracotta, rust and deep red with geometric upholstery, woven textures, rattan and historic-style prints. The rooms in the main building push that language further through floor-to-ceiling tropical murals and panoramic wallpapers, while cream marble bathrooms and sculptural mirrors add a more polished counterpoint. It is unapologetically decorative, but the palette keeps the effect grounded. The result feels collected rather than themed.

Rooms That Look Beyond Biarritz

The guestrooms are all slightly different, with some opening onto balconies, terraces or rooftop space. Higher floors can catch ocean views, while larger categories introduce more generous proportions. Ananbô wallpapers turn walls into imagined landscapes, extending the sense of travel beyond the Basque coast itself. Ikat cushions, patterned textiles and deep colours reinforce that mood, making the rooms feel more transportive than restrained. The bathrooms are equally considered, with cream marble, sculptural detailing and Ortigia amenities giving them a surprisingly substantial presence for a small four-star hotel.

A Garden Hidden Behind the City

At the back of the hotel, everything slows down. A leafy garden and shaded terrace create a surprisingly calm space just behind Rue Gambetta, while Le Jardin becomes one of the property’s strongest social spaces in summer. Seasonal dishes centre on local produce, with Basque-influenced plates, local wines and evening events giving the courtyard real life rather than treating it as decorative outdoor space. Breakfast is also served towards the garden, reinforcing the feeling that the hotel’s best spaces are slightly hidden from the street.

Maison Silhouette, Across the Road

The newer Maison Silhouette expands the hotel without trying to replicate it exactly. Designed by Studio Juliette Saier, the six-room extension occupies a former townhouse and shifts towards a more residential atmosphere. Basque red, ceramics and ikat references remain, but are handled with greater restraint, while larger layouts introduce proper sitting rooms, walk-in wardrobes, terraces and, in some cases, kitchenettes. Two attic rooms are wrapped almost entirely in red, while works by local artists bring the Basque coast into the interiors in a quieter way. The shared lounge and garden make the maison especially suited to longer stays and guests who prefer the privacy of a house to the rhythm of a hotel.

Biarritz Behind the Façade

Hôtel de Silhouette works because it does not try to reduce Biarritz to one image. There is the historic townhouse, the colourful interior world, the tropical murals, the hidden garden, the market district outside and, now, the calmer Maison Silhouette across the street. Together they create something more layered than either a heritage hotel or a surf-town boutique. Its strongest quality is the tension between those elements: grand old bones, maximalist decoration and the informal Basque life happening just outside the door.
