A Village Landmark Reborn

Hospedaria proves that extraordinary hotels can emerge from the most unexpected places. Set in the tiny village of Cumeada, just inland from Tavira and the Ria Formosa Natural Park, the whitewashed building spent more than a century serving as the village’s post office, grocery store, tavern, and social gathering place. After decades of abandonment, owner Rui Liberato de Sousa and Lisbon architects Atelier RUA have transformed it into a boutique retreat that preserves its history while giving it an entirely new purpose. Even the original red post office sign remains. A quiet reminder of the building’s past.

Architecture with Quiet Confidence

The restoration embraces simplicity rather than spectacle. The original buildings have been carefully preserved, while five contemporary guest rooms have been added as low-rise pavilions around a sequence of intimate courtyards and gardens. Whitewashed walls, reed-lined ceilings, polished concrete floors, deep shadows, and sheltered outdoor spaces create an atmosphere that feels unmistakably Algarve while expressing a thoroughly modern architectural language. Nothing feels forced. Everything belongs.

Art, Craft and Character

Hospedaria feels as much like a private collection as it does a hotel. The original tiled bar has been preserved, contemporary photography by artists including Abdel Keita Tavares and João Louro punctuates the interiors, while vintage furniture, antique objects, woven textures, industrial lighting, and handmade details create spaces that feel collected rather than designed. Every room opens onto its own private garden, shaded by mature fig or almond trees. Rustic. Curated. Wonderfully authentic.

Life unfolds gently here. Breakfasts celebrate local bakeries, homemade preserves, fresh fruit, and regional cheeses, while traditional Algarve recipes inspired by the owner’s family appear on the dinner menu.
