Originally built as accommodation for airline crews during layovers, the hotel has been completely reimagined by New York-based BHDM Design into a joyful celebration of Hawaii’s natural beauty. Rather than relying on predictable island motifs, the designers translated the colours of tropical flowers, lush vegetation, rainbows, coral reefs, and dramatic Pacific sunsets into a contemporary visual language that feels energetic, playful, and distinctly urban. The result is less traditional beach resort and more modern tropical design gallery.

Nature Through a Neon Lens

Guests arrive beneath a dramatic blue-to-pink ombré entrance before stepping into a lobby that immediately announces the hotel’s personality. A glowing neon “Aloha” sign welcomes visitors, while vivid yellows, electric blues, rich magentas, and crisp white architectural elements create an atmosphere that feels optimistic and unmistakably Hawaiian. One of the hotel’s defining features is the spectacular art installation by Canadian studio Moss & Lam. More than 400 sculptural white leaves cascade through the double-height lobby, gently moving with the breeze during the day before transforming into a glowing artwork illuminated by colourful LED lighting after sunset. Visible from the street, the installation gives the building its own distinctive identity within busy Waikiki.

Graphic Rooms with Island Character

The guestrooms continue the playful design narrative. Bold colour palettes replace neutral beach-house clichés, while large topographic relief maps of the Hawaiian Islands serve as striking headboards, reminding guests exactly where they are. Corridors painted in vibrant reds, floral wallpapers, colourful textiles, and graphic patterns reinforce the immersive experience throughout the hotel. Although visually expressive, the rooms remain comfortable and welcoming, balancing playful design with practical functionality.

Contemporary art continues beyond the interiors. Murals by California artist DJ Neff animate the staircases and rooftop pool deck, adding another layer of movement and colour to the guest experience. The rooftop itself offers a relaxed escape above the city, where vibrant artwork and sweeping views over Waikiki create an atmosphere that feels equally suited to daytime lounging and sunset cocktails. Every public space reflects the same creative confidence, turning the hotel into an ever-changing visual experience.
