The Usual Rotterdam proves that sustainability doesn’t have to be visible to be meaningful—it simply has to be built into everything. Located in the heart of Rotterdam, the hotel was conceived as a blueprint for regenerative hospitality, where every design decision supports a lower environmental impact without sacrificing style or atmosphere. Created by JOI-Design, the interiors are guided by circular design principles and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, making this one of Europe’s most progressive hospitality projects. Here, good design doesn’t just look beautiful. It does good.

Circular Design with Character

From the moment you enter, nature becomes part of the experience. The lobby combines reclaimed wood, river-stone flooring, abundant greenery and warm earth tones to create an atmosphere that feels more like a contemporary living room than a traditional hotel. The U Bar continues the story with mosaic walls made from terrazzo offcuts, tables crafted from recycled timber composites, and bar stools produced from recycled plastic mixed with coffee grounds. Vintage pieces sourced from local flea markets add personality while giving existing furniture a second life. Every material has been chosen with intention.

Rooms Designed for Today

The Usual offers accommodation for every type of traveler. Japanese-inspired Pod rooms provide compact, private spaces for shorter stays, while the Cosy and Usual guestrooms combine cork walls, ceramic terrazzo, soft terracotta colours and miniature terrariums that introduce a touch of greenery indoors. For longer visits, spacious Studios include kitchenettes, dining areas and sleeper sofas, making them ideal for digital nomads and extended city stays. Throughout the hotel, sustainable materials, circular furniture and clever space-saving solutions demonstrate that environmentally conscious design can feel warm, refined and inviting.

More Than a Hotel

The Usual is designed to become part of Rotterdam’s daily life. The U Bar, co-working spaces, library, game room and community tables encourage guests and locals to meet naturally throughout the day. Around seventy percent of the food and drinks are sourced from local producers, supporting nearby businesses while reducing transport emissions. Green roofs, bird houses and insect hotels extend the sustainability philosophy beyond the building itself, contributing to biodiversity within the city. Powered entirely by Dutch wind energy and holding Green Key certification, The Usual continues to push for even higher environmental standards through ongoing carbon monitoring and ambitious sustainability certifications.
