A colourful reinvention of an 1980s beachfront hotel, where Flower Power references meet contemporary resort architecture

Why DNA Hotels loves it

Baranowitz + Kronenberg retain the massing of the original 1980s structure while radically opening it up, turning an inward-looking building into a much more social and transparent beachfront hotel.

The design translates Ibiza’s bohemian past through colour, sunlight, shadow, murals, embroidery and local references rather than falling back on the usual whitewashed-island clichés.

The stepped W Lounge, sea-facing WET Deck and rooftop pool create a sequence of social spaces that feel deliberately theatrical without losing connection to Santa Eulària and the Mediterranean.

The Stay

W Ibiza | Santa Eulària des Riu, Spain

Turning the Building Inside Out

The starting point was not especially promising. A bulky 1980s Balearic hotel sat directly on Santa Eulària’s seafront, introverted and visually disconnected from the promenade and the sea. Baranowitz + Kronenberg’s response was not demolition. It was reorientation. Working with local studio GSA, they kept the main structural mass of the existing building but reworked its relationship with the outside world, opening sightlines from the entrance through the public spaces towards the Mediterranean. That move defines the hotel. The architecture becomes less about enclosure and more about flow.

Flower Power, Reframed

The design concept draws on Ibiza’s hippie-era mythology, but avoids turning it into costume. Baranowitz + Kronenberg described “Flower Power” as the project’s guiding narrative. That appears in colour rather than cliché. Golden sand. Deep blue. Pastel pink. Sunset yellow. Muted neutrals. The palette moves through public spaces and guestrooms, while murals, embroidered details and references to the island’s myths add more specific layers. Tanit, Ibiza’s ancient protective goddess, appears in artwork and textiles. Tables incorporate motifs inspired by cave paintings. History enters through fragments rather than decoration.

A Lobby Built for Interaction

The ground floor is one of the strongest parts of the project. Instead of a conventional reception-lounge arrangement, the W Lounge rises in a sequence of amphitheatre-like platforms. Seats, cushions and informal gathering spaces climb through the volume, creating different levels of interaction. It can feel almost like an urban living room. Or a small arena. That ambiguity is intentional. Public life is central to the design, and the ground floor is conceived less as circulation space than as a stage for guests, locals and events.

162 Rooms, Sun and Shadow

The 162 guestrooms and suites carry the same ideas into a calmer register. Natural and locally produced materials form the base. Colour does the rest. Pollock-like headboards introduce graphic energy. Deep-blue curtains reference the sea. Tasselled cushions, murals and tactile fabrics soften the architecture. Most rooms have balconies, and light is allowed to shift visibly through the interiors over the course of the day. The rooms are not especially minimal. But they are controlled enough to let the Mediterranean remain present.

The WET Deck

Outside, the geometry of the existing building becomes part of the experience. The WET Deck pool follows the shape of the hotel, its angular form sitting tightly between the wings of the structure. Colour-blocked awnings move from yellow to blue, echoing sunset, mountain and sea. By day, it is the centre of the resort. By afternoon, DJs push the atmosphere towards something more social. This is not the place for absolute silence. W Ibiza never pretends otherwise.

A Quieter Counterpoint Above

Upstairs, the rooftop introduces a second rhythm. An adults-only infinity pool and the Glow bar offer broader views and a little more breathing room. It is still social. But more elevated, visually and atmospherically. This vertical shift from the WET Deck to the rooftop is important: the hotel does not rely on a single mood. Different parts of the building carry different levels of energy.

Food Along the Seafront

Dining spreads across several identities rather than one signature restaurant. Fire focuses on the grill and sea views. Ve Café takes a lighter, health-conscious approach. SEU Pizza @STEPS brings a more casual Italian note. Yellow Fish extends the hotel onto the beach itself with grilled fish, Spanish flavours and a distinctly more relaxed chiringuito spirit. The variety suits the scale of the hotel. More importantly, the beachfront setting keeps food and drink connected to the promenade rather than sealing everything inside the resort.

Wellness After the Noise

AWAY Spa and the FIT gym provide the obvious reset. The spa is restrained compared with the hotel’s public spaces, which is probably a good thing. Treatments, beauty services and fitness occupy a calmer visual world, while terrace yoga sessions add another connection to the outdoors. Again, W Ibiza works through contrast. Colour and music outside. Quiet inside.

Why It Works

W Ibiza is most successful as an architectural transformation rather than simply as a colourful lifestyle hotel. Baranowitz + Kronenberg inherit a difficult 1980s building and make it porous, social and outward-looking without erasing its original mass. The “Flower Power” concept then gives that architecture a distinctly Ibizan identity through colour, local symbolism, sunlight and texture. It is playful, sometimes loud, and very much a W — but beneath the branding is a smart act of reuse and a clear spatial idea: open the building to the sea, let public life flow through it, and allow Ibiza’s energy to do the rest.
